The Resident Review

Juliet (Hilary Swank) is a young doctor that’s coming off a bad breakup with her boyfriend. While searching for a new place to live in New York City, Juliet comes across a gigantic apartment that she loves but fears is out of her price range. The landlord, Max (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), informs her that the place is only $3,700 a month, and Juliet, floored by how low the rent is (LOL WUT?), takes it without any hesitation. Max seems like the perfect guy. He’s handy; he takes care of his ailing grandfather (Christopher Lee); he’s there to assist Juliet with whatever is troubling her; he has a really sweet beard; and he played the Comedian in Zack Snyder’s The Watchmen. Pretty perfect, no? After things between Juliet and Max get steamy, Juliet fears that things are progressing too quickly and leaves Max with a serious case of blue balls. Instead of going back to his place and fapping it out, Max goes the creepy psychotic route. Will Juliet discover that Max is a Creepy McCreepster before it’s too late?
While there’s nothing about The Resident that makes it unique or memorable in any way, it’s far better than the 39% ranking that it’s currently got on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s a predictable film. Odds are that you’ve seen a dozen films that are just like this. That said, it’s kind of the perfect movie for you to randomly watch on Netflix late one evening. In our case, it was around 11:30 in the evening, we weren’t ready to go to bed, we flipped on Netflix and were just like “this seems good.” In that setting, movies like this are perfect. They’re corny; you can mock the cheesy dialogue; and yet it provides just enough suspenseful moments to hold your interest. If you’re bored and can’t find anything to watch on Netflix, you can do far worse than The Resident.
